A traditional guitar setup looks a little like this. You plug your instrument into a pedalboard which goes into your amplifier. To be fair, the analog aspect of it offers the most authentic sound and guitarist experience. Pretty straightforward, however the cost associated with this system can get pricey and become hard to manage especially when you're in transit.
In recent years, FX units have risen as a mainstream alternative to pedalboards, becoming a solution to the problem of always needing to buy new pedals and choosing which ones to bring to your next gig.
